Nerve was founded by Genevieve Field and Rufus Griscom in 1997.  The site isn’t purely a dating website. Instead, it is considered an intelligent sex themed magazine for men and women. Although it initially focused more on sexually themed content, today the magazine has expanded to include general information about love and culture. The site is an original blend of content, dating and information. Users can discover tips for sex and dating, learn about popular entertainment such as music, movies and television, and read up on current vents through Nerve’s news articles. The content ranges from blog posts to forums as well as personal advertisements posted by users. Nerve has also produced a handful of books, including Full Frontal Fiction, Sex Etiquette and the New Nude.

The Look of Nerve

The Nerve website feels very much like a media focused site. Users will notice a few advertisements scattered throughout, however the main articles and content are positioned in the main viewing area. Text content mingles with colorful graphics and images along with a hint of nostalgic style that help catch the eye.  The personal advertisements include color images and user details.  The homepage also features a personal spotlight area that includes a glimpse of a user’s advertisement.

Nerve has a very bold, sexually charged appearance that seems to seep down into the roots of the content it covers. The site caters to a similar user group.  Users can connect with others who have a similar passion for cultural, sexual and love related topics. Nerve offers its users a number of features, although not all are focused on the personal advertisements. A photography area is also available with a safe for work portion that is accessible by those with a free account (paid members can access additional photos that include explicit content).
