Relationship counseling offers couples another way to solve their issues and live together in harmony. The concept of relationship counseling was born in Germany during the 1920s. The following decade it was adopted by the United States.  Relationship counseling took on a more familiar form during the 1950s as therapists started applying psychological issues to family situations. In the past, family, friends or church leaders were usually the individuals who administered this type of counseling. Today couples have many far more desirable and professional options available to them.  Trained counselors offer their services in a discreet manner, retaining respect and consideration for those they counsel.

Why Do Some Couples Require Relationship Counseling?

Many couples go through life without seeing a relationship counselor. Some however need further assistance to make things work.  Counseling for couples works by identifying patterns, referred to as negative interaction cycles. These can appear over time or after a problem or event, such as a job loss that impacts the household income or the influence of relatives in the relationship. The problems that arise could be brought on primarily by one partner or both however the issues usually become more damaging when both parties react negatively.

The need for relationship counseling is usually brought on by multiple factors rather than just one. A single issue is usually something a healthy couple can handle, however as more are piled on and additional complications stem from those, the burden can become quite heavy. Relationship counseling works by encouraging each partner to be aware of the problems the couple experiences. They learn how to take responsibility for their contribution to the issues plaguing the relationship. Counselors will also focus on helping the couple understand each individual partner’s emotions and perceptions of what is going on. This helps the pair see the problem, identify it then come up with ways to correct or work around it. Some couples also find better ways to coexist together while retaining their individuality.
